NSFW Artist Interviews #1 - Edeshye

Posted by HavryloThePigeon - August 11th, 2021

Welcome simps and thots to the first installment of NSFW Artist Interviews! This'll be me, Havrylo, interviewing hentai artists and speaking to them about their origins as an artist, their craft and style of work, advice for other NSFW artists, etc. and so forth!

Today's pilot interview is with my good friend @Edeshye, a Brazilian artist, animator and game developer best known for his text adventure/interactive sex game 'Cute Neighbour', made in Flash right before the program's end-of-life in 2020. Today he speaks to me about his plans for quitting his regular job to pursue a career as NSFW game dev, his reasons for sticking to Flash, his upcoming projects, his advice for other aspiring NSFW artists, and his efforts to create his own style and identity for the 'Edeshye' brand!

So I guess my first question is pretty simple. How would you describe yourself and the work that you do?

I'm a dude in my late 20's who realised that a regular job sucks and it's better to be our own boss. Therefore I started Edeshye, in the hope that I can live 100% out of it one day. My work is essentially human hentai games, where interactivity in the sex scenes is key. I try to make it as interactive as possible, with the player being able to choose the speed, to grab the girl's ass and things like that. Quite unfortunately, the "dying of Flash" thing limited my exposure on that matter, because Flash is the only thing I know basically, so I got stuck to uploading videos (for now). But I keep working with Flash, the difference now is that the sex scenes are only interactive for patrons, because they can download the content and play on their computers.

I can imagine it must be difficult knowing you'll basically have to learn an entirely new program if you want to get a lot bigger. Do you feel comfortable sticking to this "sex scenes only interactive for patrons" setup or do you think you might try tackling new game dev software in the near future, like Unity or anything else?

Yes, that was a bummer. It's really simple to code on Flash, and that's why I can make games on my own - I'm not a programmer, you know - and having the possibility to animate and code on the same software is just awesome. This first semester I uploaded only videos, and even saying there were interactive versions on Patreon, I didn't get anything close to the exposure I had when I launched Cute Neighbour last year. In my opinion, my animations got better, but games get way more attention, so it didn't matter. So I decided to change strategy again. I'm currently making a game for Halloween and I'm learning simple things on Unity. I'm still using Flash to animate, but the game will be on Unity. I'll use the animations made on flash, so it will have its limits. The full interactive versions will still be on flash, but I can only hope I get a nice exposure with this game.

That sounds like the perfect opportunity to talk about your games! Obviously you make interactive sex games, and you're a bit of a self-admitted amateur. Your breakout project was undoubtedly Cute Neighbour in 2020. What would you say makes your games stylistically unique compared to others? What really makes your games part of the 'Edeshye' brand? What about them makes them you?

I think I'm still learning what's my style. I've launched very few things, and the last of them wasn't even a game (it was interactive, but it was just the sex scenes). But now like I said before I'm back making games, and what I aim for with them is for people to really have fun while playing them - even if they don't want to fap. I really want the non-fap part of my games to be entertaining, funny and challenging. And as a reward for their hard work, I really want the player to have a good time with the sex scenes, of course.

About the sex scenes, I think what makes my games different is all the interactive things, grabbing the girl's butt, boobs, hair, controlling the camera closer of further away, this kind of stuff. That and the vector style of the art, as opposed to hand drawing or painting.

That's interesting. What inspired you do to go for vector art specifically?

That wasn't exactly a choice. Flash is the software I know, and it's vector-based, so there you go, heh.

Good point. Do you think you'll ever branch off and try incorporating things like hand drawing into other projects?

Not actually. I get along fine with vector, so I don't see why I should try to fix what's not broken, you know? Heh.

Fair enough. What actually inspired you to get into the hentai biz anyway? At some point your mind must have gone, "Hey, I wanna make sex games now!" How did that come about?

So, I was a kid in the 00's and I ended up playing some hentai flash games like Frank's Adventure or Galaxy Angel Sim Date, and I really had fun playing them. I wasn't just horny, those games really had me having fun and laughing. I played a lot of other stuff on Newgrounds and watched all the animations, and that got me wanting to learn flash. I started learning it but I never really made something serious. I recall making some hentai stuff just for fun, but never uploaded them and never got to finish them too. This was pre-Patreon.

Life went on and in the late 2010's I started seeing all these Patreon accounts of hentai artists and games, making tons of money. I was already going on with my life, but there was this thought like, "Maybe someday I'll search for someone to make games with me." After a few years I thought, "You know what? I can do this shit on my own." And here I am now. Surely I'm just beginning, but I do not intend to stop!

Right on! And on that note, would you say there are any particular artists that inspire you or influence your style?

In relation to the game style, those I mentioned are definitely a direct inspiration. In relation to the art and animations themselves, I surely follow a lot of hentai creators, but I don't recall any of them being vector-based.

If you were to give advice to any other aspiring hentai artists, what would it be?

For games specifically, make teasers, post your stuff on erotic games subreddits, make sure to have a link to your page hardcoded in your game (people WILL pirate - and weirdly enough, this will help you grow).

But I guess the most important - yet most obvious - is: produce! If you don't produce, don't expect to get patrons out of nowhere.

Apart from that, I could surely use some advice myself! Heh.

That's a good point! Regardless of how well we get, there's always room to improve and take advice from others.

I think that's about everything I wanted to ask. This was actually really cool! I'm glad you were onboard with it.

My pleasure! Any time!
